Some of the most well known residents of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park are the golden eagles and ospreys. Fortunate visitors to the Breadalbane mountainous region may witness the majestic soaring of golden eagles, which are present all year round. Ospreys only visit during the warmer months; usually arriving at Loch Lomond or the Lake of Menteith in April. Most ospreys will have left by August but juveniles can be present as late as early September. A common but equally famous bird, the red grouse, is resident all year and can be found fairly easily.
Other avian species include pied flycatcher, redstart and wood warblers; also in summer but in the forested areas. The melodic song of the wood warbler is particularly pleasant to listen to whilst walking through the woods. Look out for crested tits and crossbills in coniferous plantations too. Winter species can be found in the wet lowlands. Goldeneye and whooper swans frequent the lochs while leaving the grazing of the grassy banks to greenland white fronted geese, a northern dark varient of the white fronted goose.

Another famous resident of the National Park is the red squirrel - the European species which has already been replaced by the North American grey in most areas. The countryside rangers would appreciate it if you could notify them of any sightings. Contact the rangers
We are particularly fortunate in benefitting from great wildlife. Otters, water voles and water shrews are all present too. To see them, you'll need patience and luck - possibly both. But you have to be there to stand a chance!
